The Psoas

I saw this great article on the psoas muscle that I’ve been meaning to share with you. It’s so interesting that I’ve actually read it twice! I find it especially fascinating since I work on the psoas muscle with the pregnant ladies I adjust.
Anyway, here it is for your reading enjoyment

Detoxing for The Summer

Just finished a 7 day detox and I feel great! The cravings I thought I’d have are virtually non-existent. I think that regular detoxes are a great way to adopt heathy eating habits since it slowly trains your body to accept healthier foods while diminishing your cravings for things like flour, sugar, caffeine, and dairy.

Dieting never works, let’s face it. Why? Because it forces you to do something you don’t want to do, give up the food that you love. Detoxing just keeps you from them for a little while and helps you get in tune with what your body REALLY wants. And it wants to be happy and healthy!

I can’t say that I’ll never eat those foods, but I can certainly do without them for some time. Getting adjusted helped as well. Having my nervous system clear of any subluxations helped me to feel more in tune with my body as well as process the changes I was going through and let go!

So, my grandmother passed away recently. She was my inspiration in health and wellness. She was always conscious of my sugar intake, always read the ingredients and nutrition labels and made me aware of what I was putting in my body. She always ate enough dairy because it was good for the bones, and she loved fish because it’s healthy for the brain. She exercised everyday and was never on any medications. Ironic that she suffered with Alzheimer’s and osteoporosis…

She gave me some great relationship advice when I was little.  She said, “Lara, when you grow up, you’re going to have a lot of boyfriends.  With each boyfriend there will be at least one thing you’re gonna love about them.  But one day, you’re gonna find the ONE boy with all the ONE qualities that the others had.”  This advice really helped me get over heart breaks easily.  Rather than shut down because so and so dumped me, I would acknowledge what I loved about the person and move on.  This helped my heart break OPEN, rather than break apart.

When I had my first chiropractic adjustment, I was told that I had a subluxation to my heart.  This might explain why I had heart palpitations and perhaps why I felt depressed.  But after that adjustment, I wasn’t depressed anymore.  I had a greater understanding of WHY I felt the way I did, and the heart palpitations became more clear.  When I say clear, I mean my body was communicating with me and the more I listened the healthier I felt.  The adjustment also cleared my depression!

You see, chiropractic is about more than back and neck pain, or sciatica, or headaches.  It’s about feeling clear and healthy from WITHIN!

Germs are your friends!

I read this fascinating article in the NY times online about the many microbes that live in and make up who we are.

In chiropractic, we see health from a different paradigm, from an inside-out perspective rather than outside-in. Simply put we believe healing comes from within as long as there is balance and no interference. If dis-ease does manifest in the body, restoring balance to the body is more effective than taking a drug to cover up a symptom.

Now, I understand, sometimes you just want to take that aspirin for that headache, but your body is not suffering with a headache because it’s not producing enough aspirin. Even if you do take that aspirin, wouldn’t you rather have your system in balance and without interference in order to more effectively process that drug?  Perhaps have two glasses of water instead.  Chances are you have a headache because you’re dehydrated…

Anyway! Here is the article so you can read it:

5 Tips on correcting breech baby

If your wondering why some babies present in the breech position there are a few reasons for this.  Mind you, there is not much scientific evidence that can validate this theory (not that I know of, anyway), but if you give it some thought, you’ll find that it might ring true to you.  The first reason is physical.  This means that there is a physical issue, ie. old injury, like a fall or accident, that has created a misalignment in the pelvis.  This misalignment may not give baby enough room to move around and thus, it gets stuck in breech.   The good news is that chiropractic can help!  Chiropractic helps to restore proper alignment and balances the spine so the mental impulses can travel more effectively through the neuro-system.  This is a good thing, especially when your body is making another human being.  The second reason is emotional.  Hormones aside, there may be questions and insecurities that a new mother has about having a baby.  As a result, baby likes to stay close to mommy’s heart, as if to say “Mommy, I love you and I chose you”.  Now, I know that this is a bit ‘out there’ for some to accept, but mindset and emotions play a bigger part in what we manifest than we like to think.  The good news is, chiropractic can help with this as well!  You see, when your spine is in proper alignment and the mental impulses are clear and flowing from the brain to the rest of the body, there is balance and clarity in the mind.  We are able to handle stress more effectively with chiropractic care.  If you don’t believe me, then come in for a few adjustments and see for yourself.

Being that I take care of many pregnant women, I hear a lot about the advice they are given to help their little ones turn in the proper position. Here are some informative and unique methods for turning breech babies.

5. Headstands in a pool. If you have access to a pool, get on your swim suit and get in the water! Being in the pool may also help alleviate some physical discomfort that comes with being pregnant. Take about 15-30 minutes to do headstands. Mind you, unless you have SCUBA gear, you’ll only be under water for about 10 seconds or so.

4. Flashlight on your belly. Take a flashlight and shine it right under your belly, between your belly button and pubic bone. Babies seem to respond to light and may turn to see what’s goin’ on down there.

3. Headphones on the belly. Playing music may also work. Get some nice sized headphones and place them under your belly and feel your baby dance :). My cousin did this with her baby and he would turn downward and face the music. Unfortunately, when the music stopped he would turn back around!

2. Version technique. This is something that your OB can do. This may require an epidural and I’ve heard can be a bit uncomfortable. Statistically, this helps about 50% of the time. Two people I know went in for this procedure and ended up having c-sections right afterward due to complications arising from this technique.

1. CHIROPRACTIC!!! Now mind you, I and biased, but what can I say? Chiropractic works!! Why and how does it work? Well, chiropractic helps to restore balance within your neuro-system by removing/releasing subluxations which cause tension in your body. When this tension is released, balance is restored and there is more space for baby to move into it’s proper position. The technique most used on pregnant women is the Webster Technique. This technique focuses on releasing tension in the pelvis and uterus. Case studies have shown that Chiropractic adjustments, particularly the Webster technique, have an 85-91% success rate in turning breech babies!
Chiropractic can also help make pregnancy much easier and birth much faster. I can personally attest to this since my first was born in less than 2 hours and my second in 3 hours.
Now, there is a saying in chiropractic that goes like this: “Chiropractic first, drugs second, surgery last”. While I listed these tips in descending order, when chiropractic is put first, the rest becomes less necessary.
If you would like more information on the benefits of Webster Technique as well as research please feel free to come in and visit us at Soulshine! I know people like links to documentation supporting these claims, but to be honest, I’m not as savvy with this blog yet. When I figure out how to add links to my posts, I’ll be linking like crazy! Until then, come in and check out our printed information and have a conversation with me, Dr. Lara, or Dr. Phil. Until then…
We look forward to serving you 🙂

The Flu

Is it me or does everyone seem to be getting ‘sick’ lately?

Frankly, it doesn’t surprise me. It saddens me, though, that people are being made to believe that taking a flu vaccine is going to help them. Thank you, Dr. Oz, for debunking the myth that one can’t get the flu from the vaccine. I’m sure Piers Morgan thanks you as well.

You see, health doesn’t come from a needle. Injecting known toxic chemicals into your body will not provide the protection that chiropractic care and a healthy diet will. Science has proven this. Hasn’t it? Regardless of what science says, it seems more and more people are questioning and refusing vaccines for themselves and their children. Why? Because it seems that the vaccines are causing more problems than they are preventing!

Here’s something that really grinds my gears.  Healthcare workers, such as nurses, are being forced to take the flu vaccine under threat of being fired.  The reason; being unvaccinated puts the immuno-compromised at risk.  Now, let’s think this through for a moment.  The vaccine insert states, the vaccine does not guarantee protection against the flu, and warns of a slew of adverse effects.  This fact aside, the vaccine is a live vaccine.  This means that for the next 3-4 weeks, the virus is going to be shedding in your system.  This means that you will be contagious with the flu!  Is this safe for immuno-compromised individuals?  Now let’s think about hundreds of vaccinated hospital workers all shedding the flu virus at the same time…

Let’s get back to what I just said about chiropractic providing better protection than vaccines. I’m going to quote a ‘Facebook friend’ on this one who put it very well; ” The more organized everything is, the better it functions and the healthier you are. Your Innate Intelligence is what runs and purposefully organizes all the parts of your body to work harmoniously together. When you are subluxated (Loss of function in the spine with concomitant loss of neural connection), the alteration in the flow of mental impulses to and from the brain results in disorganization, loss of function and loss of health. Chiropractic adjustments help restore function in the spine, in order to re-establish neural connection and normalize the flow of mental impulses, thereby allowing the body to resume functioning normally – healthfully.” So, make sure to get adjusted and if you need, I also have a great chicken soup recipe.

Small Family Business

I was talking with a dear friend the other day. We’re both relatively new to running our own small business and this is what she said, “There are times when you need to work in your business, and then there are times when you need to work on your business.” You see, they don’t teach you how to run a business in chiropractic school. There were a few classes where we were taught to envision our practice, figure out what we wanted it to look like and what kind of people we’d see, yadda yadda yadda. I was never told that I would need liability insurance, unemployment insurance, and that signing a business lease requires a 3 month security deposit.

Amidst all the unexpected expenses there are the ever looming student loan payments that just keep getting bigger and bigger! How do people handle it? When I was first turned on to chiropractic I felt a passion that I’ve never felt before. It was as if I had woken up to the biggest secret in the world and all I wanted was to share it! This passion could not be quelled. I can recall a time I was shopping with my mom and I saw a blood donation bus in the parking lot.  Long story short, my mother finds me on this bus and asks me why am I donating my blood? My response: “Chiropractic is in my blood! My love for it runs through my veins and now it will run through someone else’s veins!” The look on everyone’s face was priceless.  My mom just rolled her eyes and told me to hurry up because she wanted to leave. My family is quirky in the sense that they encourage me by trying to discourage me. My dad would constantly tell me that I was too small and weak to adjust someone of his size. My mother would tell me that if I wanted to go to chiropractic school I’d have to take out student loans. Even my grandmother told me I shouldn’t be a chiropractor! My grandmother, who always encouraged me, practically begged me not to become a chiropractor, because they’re just too weird!

No one could understand how much in love I fell with chiropractic. They couldn’t fathom the passion that would inspire other chiropractors to adjust people despite facing arrest for practicing medicine without a license. Imagine, getting arrested, going to jail, facing a trial, paying a fine and then going right back to work under the threat of arrest again! This is what many chiropractors had to face.

So, I took out loans, moved to Georgia and then to California until I graduated and became Doctor Lara! I still get a kick out of that since I never thought I’d be a doctor in my life.  Before chiropractic, I got a degree in film and television because I felt the need to create something inspiring and uplifting to replace the depressing, misogynistic and indoctrinating crap we’re exposed to each day. I quickly realized that my dream of making the world a better place would not succeed if I was to make it in film and television. This could also be why my parents didn’t want to spend another $100,000 on my DC degree. But, Chiropractic saved me. Not from any pain or postural misalignment, but spiritually. I had found my calling! My dreams no longer weighted me down, they guided me, inspired me and cleared the path to my success!

So, what happened? I find myself now in a place where I’ve built a wall around my passion as if to protect it. I’m struggling to figure out how to run a business and take care of a family while still keeping my passion for chiropractic alive. I’m left wondering how I ended up here. What am I doing wrong? What am I doing right? All I want is to help people feel better, to come alive inside and discover their passion! I believe that if everyone does what they were meant to do in this life, then there would be harmony on Earth! Everyone should discover what brings them joy and peace and live their lives accordingly. I feel that through chiropractic care, it could happen for them.

As Marianne Williamson wrote for Nelson Mandela, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

It’s time to tear down the wall, let my light shine, thus allowing others to let their light shine!

Babies need chiropractic!

Ever since son number two has been born I’ve been doing something that I’m sure most moms do when their baby is fresh and new, I check to make sure he’s still breathing when he sleeps.  From what I understand it’s a normal thing, and while I’ve checked on my first one when he was this tender age, I seem to be checking on my new one a little more often.  Those who come to see me also see baby #2 in his Pack-n-Play, usually asleep.

What makes this child unique is the fact that he sleeps on his belly.  A client of mine expressed concern over this since belly sleeping has been linked to SIDS.  She stated that research has been done that definitely proves that there is a direct link, and that babies who sleep on their belly don’t get enough air in their lungs due to the fact that their head is turned.  Well, there are many things that are linked to SIDS such as viruses and infections that go undetected until it’s too late, as well as adverse reactions to vaccines and other chemical stresses that the newborns are exposed to.  I’m not going to address those issues here, but I will address the issue of belly sleeping as the only cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

You see, when a child is born, be it c-section or vaginal delivery, a subluxation occurs at the atlas.  The Atlas is the first cervical vertebrae which when subluxated impinges the brain stem which regulates our breathing.  The atlas subluxates very easily during the birth process due to the head being twisted, turned, and pulled as the baby is being born.  This is why babies need to be adjusted after birth!!   (My little one got his first adjustment about 5 minutes after he popped out of me.)

If the atlas remains subluxated it will have an adverse effect on the baby’s health and well-being.  If your baby is a belly sleeper like mine is, you definitely want to have their atlas adjusted.  A baby’s adjustment is much more gentle than an adjustment for an adult, because baby’s don’t hold the same kind of tension in their bodies and their muscles are much more soft.

Needless to say, my belly sleeping baby gets his atlas checked regularly.  He also only sleeps on his belly in his crib and other firm surfaces, not on comforters, pillows or beds.  These are important factors to consider when you have a baby that sleeps on it’s stomach, but none more important than that first adjustment!

I recently read about an experiment where a group of people were lied to about a particular fact for some time.  After this lie had been established in the people’s minds, the truth regarding this particular fact was revealed.  The results of this experiment showed that if people are lied to on a consistent basis, not only does that lie become the truth in their minds, but most will reject the truth when it is revealed to them!   Even fight to the death to uphold their beliefs.

One of the biggest lies that we have been told, or lead to believe is that the body is a machine and it needs drugs, vaccines and surgery to be healthy and whole.  When I was first turned on to chiropractic there was a mantra, if you will, that went  like this: Chiropractic First!  Drugs second. Surgery last.  Chances are, if you were to follow this direction, drugs and surgery wouldn’t be necessary.  You see, chiropractic releases/removes subluxations which allows the body’s innate healing ability to be fully expressed.  When the body is in balance, and the neuro system is free from interference, there is a greater sense of clarity and connection that comes from within.  A sense of well being that drugs and surgery just can’t compare with.  Pain becomes less of a discomfort and more of a way the body communicates to you.  Your paradigm of health changes and you naturally want to take better care of yourself.  You crave better foods, more exercise, and your outlook on life is healthier.  All because there is less stress within your neuro system.  Chiropractic is so simple and so effective, and the truth is Your body has an innate ability to heal itself!  Make an investment in yourself!
